The Mercy Beat

  • 08/2014

"Even with only three songs on this EP, The Mercy Beat express several varying sounds and capture who they are as musicians..."

The Mercy Beat consists of Sam Endicott (singer and 'The Bravery' band ex-singer) from New York; Ian Smith (bass), from Hong Kong; and Matty Bennett (guitarist), from Hawaii. Ian and Matty moved to Los Angeles, which is where they met up with Sam and created The Mercy Beat.

"Los Angeles based, New Wave-rock band, The Mercy Beat are just as cryptic and mysterious as their upcoming debut self-titled EP, which is scheduled to drop on June 17th via OSKAR Recording. If you were even a little interested in this up and coming rock group than chances are you’d hit the interwebs to try and find out facts, correct? Well, in terms of this band, you probably won’t find that much, as for the time being they love keeping things under a velvet curtain, which is perfectly fine with me as I love a little secrecy every now and then.
So, does the band’s upcoming self-titled debut EP meet demands? Or, are The Mercy Beat going to sink before they even really get the chance to swim? You can find out the answer to both of these questions in my full review of The Mercy Beat’s debut self-titled EP below:

1. An Act Of Mercy
"It’s so different, while still being great” was the first thing that came to mind when jumping into The Mercy Beat’s self-titled EP. “An Act Of Mercy” features a slew of quite amazing instrumental techniques that had my senses in a heightened state of ecstasy as they danced around my mind in fantastic glory, creating a fun and mystical world for the track’s lyrics to play in. The self-titled EP’s opening number isn’t your usual piece of music, it’s much better and different than your average mainstream pop song, that I suspect listeners will have this specific track on repeat for weeks-to-months at a time.

2. Sweet
“Sweet” follows the same “out of box” thinking that “An Act Of Mercy” appeared to follow, while putting on a more subtle and flashy show. “Sweet” is certainly sweet to my ears, as my sense of music was thrown out the window for a groovy piece of excellence. The Mercy Beat are quickly becoming one of my favorite bands to release music in 2014, and this track proves why more listeners should be paying attention to the band’s touch of catchy choruses, thought-provoking verse lines and instrumental prowess that will have many cheering for more. This track will certainly be one I show all of my friends.

3. Fool For A Fool
The bass lines present during this track drove my mind crazy, as my headphones vibrated along with the pluck of each string, and that’s not a bad thing! A lot of you might not know this, but the bass is my choice instrument, and for a band to showcase it so heavily is quite the sound, a sound that has me hooked and awaiting more music from this fantastic new-wave band. “Fool For A Fool” catches attention with its clever twists and turns that truly mix the various sounds that will grace listeners ears for years to come. The Mercy Beat could very well be the new generation’s U2, which to some doesn’t mean much, but I’m sure the band will take that as a compliment, as they give the billionaire pop-rock band a run for their money.

The Mercy Beat’s upcoming debut self-titled EP is more than just your average pop album, even though it sports a lot of characteristics of a pop album, it’s just a guise for what’s truly under the hood, and I’m more than confident that these talented musicians are more than prepared for the spotlight. The EP features three well put together tracks that will challenge listeners’ senses and have them wanting more very soon. I give The Mercy Beat’s debut self-titled EP a 5 out of 5."
